The Forum
Post by iconPost by zezo | 2009-06-06 | 16:45:17

I've spent the last two days writing a simple forum script.

That time would be better spent on the optimizer itself, but I needed my own place after UG deleted the tools threads, so here it is.

It needs a lot more work, but the basic functions should be OK.

This thread is intended for ideas, bug reports and all kind of forum-related feedback.

Forums looks good. Does not need to be any more complicated at the outset 8)

Thanks. The designer will be glad to read this, and I would not write the 300 or so lines of code at all if she had not designed it on a very short notice.

New feature: Topics with new/updated posts are marked bold when you are logged in.

What are the rules here? Can we talk about tactics? Can we name boats?
Post by iconPost by zezo | 2009-06-07 | 19:29:46
No rules so far. Rules appear when someone starts doing stupid things, and I hope the people here won't do that, at least for a while.

I'm glad you established this forum. Great to talk quietly about this great program. (I'm not the helping kind of person you are!)

I used to say that I'm two totally different persons - one in the city and completely different one when on windsurfing vacation on Turkish island.

The first one is almost misanthropic, and the second one is relaxed, caring and helping people.

Then I took few days off before last Christmas after nearly getting into a fight with a coworker. And that days spent at home made me realize that the real difference is not the sea, sun, island and windsurfing. It was the job - waking up in disgust of the day ahead, filled with bureaucratic nonsense, time lost in meeting and pointless discussions, etc. was killing the human in me. So I decided to quit and try something different. It's not clear yet what will come of it, but I've never looked back.

I had the same experience 10 years ago. Now I work in semi-retirement, much poorer, but much richer in terms of time sailing. Just trying to squeak by with slip fees.

Forum/blog/bug tracking system is something that I should have prepared from the start, but I did not know that at the time.

VORG players would probably appreciate a place where offending threads don't disappear in minutes and that does not say 'Database appears to be down' half of the time.

It would save me some time in the long run too. I've answered hundreds of personal messages in that two months, more or less with the same questions.

So that's part of the learning curve. I'll know better for the next online project, and will have that 300 lines of code written in the last few days ready.

You may have more than enough projects with which to occupy your talents. But I miss HTML support for italics, boldfacing, & blockquotes in comments. And Image privileges for comments is probably out of the question, right?
;-)

the script knows few bbcodes - bold and italic, but no pretty interface yet. just use [ b ] and [ /b ] tags (no spaces)

BTW there is ... tag too, but the images are just linked as URLs - not uploaded nor resized and will get out of the frame if > 600 horizontal pixels.

Hi Zezo

you seem to write code so fast that this may be of no use but :
I only want to point you at a great product we are using for project management : http://www.redmine.org

It's in php (not so badly written) and maintained by a really comprehensive french guy.
Don't look for a demo, the site itself runs on redmine.

I just want you to focus on the core routing code :-P

Thanks. In fact I've found a bug in lighttpd while developing the wind display and logged into their tracking system to report it. They use redmine and I really liked the look of it. BTW the lighttpd team seems great - about 5 minute response time on Sunday afternoon.

you mean that a cool guy is one with no family life ;-P

BTW : I should go to bed shortly as I writting false thing.
Redmine is coded in ruby.
Our redmine guy says it"s better than php but it can't explain why :-)

I'd be impressed even if they have answered in than three days. We are all aware of software products with (hundreds of) thousands of dollars price tag for which customer support response requires weeks, and a you get a fix in the next release, year from now. And because it's open source project I've fixed the bug myself and have submitted a patch, but still impressive.

Ruby seems to be cool, but my friends tell me that it's too slow for large-scale projects, and people try using it for that purpose.

Lots of thanks there. I read about this helper in an in-game forum. Simple & brilliant. After The vendée globe & 7 legs of Volvo race, that's helping me a lot to be in the top 1000 this time !

Cheers m8s.

Thanks for this site, Zezo. I've so far missed out in finishing 999 or below. But, for the first time, I was 1st in my local group. I'll take it.
