I'm just virtual sailor...
I was reading so many theoretical stories on navigation, still not sure why VMG is not the optimal angle.
Now even VMG marked on the VVOR screen... so, it should have some value...

anyone wants to share his/her view?

thanks

VMG would be optimal in a uniform wind field up to the destination point, with no shifts and constant speed, with the destination dead downwind.

With shifts and gusts along the track it might be preferable to sail lower than optimum.

When the target is not dead downwind the common sailing wisdom says you sail the leg that get you to the destination first, even if it looks same on paper, because you'll lose more distance in a bad wind shift if you sail off-course first.

It is never a good idea to sail higher than optimum, unless it's for a short time where the tacking penalty is larger than the loss of speed.
