VMG is the speed component directly into the wind.

The VMG formula is boat_speed * cos(TWA). Optimum TWA is the maximum of that function.

You have to calculate all possible angles and pick the one with best VMG.

Sometimes the polars are flat at that point and there is a range with the same VMG, especially downwind.
