After the Magellan 4 race it reported that I was to receive 120 VSR points and when I looked at my Race History stats they only gave me 112 VSR points. Does anyone know how this can be rectified and who I can report this to?

Check your points on Bgstemarine spreadsheet https://bit.ly/2USAkKo

They probably got it wrong at the finish

Please stop complaining ;-)

I got -30 points for 2062th place. Your Mom got -57 or something and fell behind me in the VSR ranking.

ELO points might be good in professional chess, but don't give you much incentive to play a stupid online game once you reach top level.

Thanks for the encouragement zezo!! :-)
But listen it was my best finish ever!!!!!
And I was actually proud of myself because I bailed out of the Magellan Strait early (SW route) and rode the trade winds merrily home to Puka Puka.
But yeah it is just a "stupid online game".... I'm just going to do one more Magellan leg, jettison ship on this whole virtual sailing thing and finally get a life.

On the serious side:

1) You can't really complain because the process is not documented. We've reverse engineered it, but there is no guarantee it's correct. And VR can also change it anytime.

2) Difference probably comes from players entering the game after your finish. What does the spreadsheet say when plugged the final numbers?

Thank you!!! Spread sheet reads 119

I'm enjoying being past caring about my VSR ranking. Sooo much less stressful to not feel like I have to enter every race and perform in every race, and so much more fun to feel free to take a flyer and lose 50 VSR points when it doesn't work. I was envisioning winning the leg by a day, but it didn't work out. I realize it's easy for me to say that after spending a year or more at #1... If I was just getting into the top 50 now, this stuff would be driving me nuts.

FWIW... The race told me I'd lose 58 points, and the actual VSR update was only 57. Probably a rounding error or something. But as Cvetan pointed out, they haven't published the formula... we just have what some motivated souls have reverse-engineered (very well!). So we live with what it is.

In fairness to VR... The game is better and more stable than it was in the past. The things we complain about now seem minor in comparison to the complaints of the past.

I can't say what it was like two years ago, but there continue to be glaring issues where VR can't even do simple ranked lists properly. Nor can they seem to manage customer service requests.

They try to make it more interesting by making teams, and team rankings, and a Hall of Fame, but those things don't really mean much when players finish in the top 100 in a race, then show up ranked in their own team as a DNS, without finish times, which negate the whole idea of inter/intra-team rankings.

VR has a ways to go.

Our guys love the idea of teams, but nobody takes much pride in doing well when VR's rankings are compromised.

I would certainly not invest in this company, other than a 15Euro payment from time to time.

Hi Lukaliz and all,

I have noticed the same, and as ones can imagine, have tried to understand what was going on !

In fact, the syndrom is quite simple. In the arrival panel, VR compute your points at the time you finish the race, with the values of the parameters at that precise time, in particular your current total VSR Points, and the current estimation for the total number of participants to the race.
When you finished the Magellan 4 race, it was before the Rolex Fastnet Race, and your Total VSR points was 4234, and the estimated number of participants for Mag.4 was somewhere around 21000 or 22000. This leads to the estimation of 120 points according to the formulas.

A couple of days later, at the closure of the Magellan 4, VR have made the final computation, but with the values of the parameters at that time. In the meantime, we have had the closure of the Rolex Fastnet Race, where your 216th rank added +57 points to your total VSR points which were then 4291. The final number of participants was also reevaluated to 24026, and then, your final number of point is +112 !

@YourMom, in your case, the final -57 vs the -58 estimated when you finished is very probably due to the increase of the total number of participants (23700 gives a -58, and 24026 gives the -57).

For those who didn't have it yet, here is the link to the calculation sheet :

Have a nice day,
Benoit.

Brilliant! Thanks for figuring it out!

Thanks Benoit - crystal clear - i guess you are 100% correct

PS - only pending question is why VR is not able to answer them-self on this ... :)

Kind regards
Sylvain
