Huge discrepancy between game console / log / relative performance

Currently in the SH the game console is showing my true wind and SOG to be about 1knt higher than the dashboard. It's also showing me to have a similar advantage over boats around me according to their card. Would be nice, but it's not reflected in relative performance. ie) I'm not passing them.

Any idea what's going on? I'm trying to hand steer to optimize speed, but I don't know what data to trust ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

The VR client and server use different data during the weather update. That's quite visible in variable/unstable conditions.

You should definitely trust the server (dashboard data) because that's what's moving your boat. When close to optimum up/downwind angles better sail fixed TWA to avoid getting in the red zone. On a reach you can sail fixed heading, but still risk unexpected sail changes/bad sail use.

If you don't exit the race you can also see how the track becomes jagged when the server correction arrives every 5 minutes and moves the boat abruptly (and possibly sideways)

The opponent data always comes from the server.

Thank you. That's very useful to know.

The wind was building in significantly from the west, right at the time of the update. I sailed a little higher for better speed and to get a little west. The console had me thinking I'd pulled some masterstroke. As the wind built, the dashboard seemed to take 10 or 20 mintues to reflect the speed shown in the client though. Didn't make sense that I had a 1knt advantage on boats only a few hundred meters away.

You are never at advantage/disadvantage compared to neighbor boats. It's the client serving you wrong data.

Come to think of it, there IS one case when you can be penalized - the client shows integer TWA but actually steers your boat at the difference between wind direction and integer heading. Which is not integer most of the time, and sailing 140.4 for 12 hours when the polars peak at 140 can waste a mile or two in certain conditions.

Got wise to that one as soon as I saw the dashboard the first time. Is there a simpler way to hit the exact integer TWA that optimizes speed without going to a bearing one click above or below and then waiting for a shift to switch to TWA? That is very time consuming and takes several attempts sometimes.

A programmed course change in heading mode will set the TWA to whatever fractional value results from the current wind direction.
Therefore, if the wind direction changes over time, you can use the following procedure:
- Add a program point in TWA mode and select the desired TWA.
- Check the exact value in the dashboard
- Switch program point to heading mode
- Move the programmed time forward or backward while in heading mode
- Switch back to TWA and check the exact value
- Finally move the point to the desired time in TWA mode.

Someone posted a video showing the procedure, but I forgot who it was and in which thread.
